Laparoscopic Duodenal Switch
The duodenal switch is an operation which reduces the size of your stomach (creating a sleeve gastrectomy) and re-attaches the small intestine resulting in a large amount of malabsorption. This is performed using a laparoscopic (keyhole) technique.
The sleeve of stomach restricts the types and amount of food you can eat, with up to 5/6 of the bowel bypassed, leaving only 85-100cm 'common channel' where food meets digestive juices and is absorbed into the body. There are also some changes to the hormones which can alter your appetite and feeling of hunger. This operation also has a dramatic effect on type 2 diabetes and can resolve up to 100% of cases.
This is a major operation which drastically alters your anatomy. Although this operation cannot be reversed, it can be revised to reduce the level of malabsorption, if needed. Following a duodenal switch it is vitally important that you take life-long vitamin and mineral supplementation, eat 100g protein in your diet daily, and have regular blood tests and long-term follow-up medical care.
This operation is often performed as a second stage procedure following the sleeve gastrectomy in the super obese, but can also be performed as a one stage procedure. It is important to bear in mind the known risks which can occur in a small percentage of cases. These include the risk of bleeding, a leak from one of the joins or staple lines, vitamin and mineral deficiency, protein malnutrition, and most patients experience diarrhoea daily. On average patients lose approximately 80% of their excess weight and some patients lose more.
